In most years, thunderstorms, tornadoes and lightning causes hundreds of injuries and deaths and billions in property and crop damages nation-wide.  To obtain critical weather information, the National Weather Service (NWS) established SKYWARN to mitigate the impact of severe weather events.

Central Illinois Skywarn is proud to partner with the Lincoln Weather Service Office (ILX) in providing Skywarn Operations in the Central Illinois Area. Our trained Skywarn team members provide essential information for all types of weather hazards and our main responsibility is to identify and report severe weather events as well as providing post-storm debris assessment information to aid the National Weather Service is compiling data on the impact of the weather event..

Central Illinois Skywarn has also been designated the distinct honor of being a WEATHER-READY NATION AMBASSADOR. This designation shows a committment to preparing our communities in the event of a sever weather incident. Part of our committment to severe weather preparedness Central Illinois Skywarn can assist local municiplaities in obtaining the designation of a Storm-Ready Community and can provide information to business so they too may become more prepared as a Storm-Read Supporter.

The Central Illinois Skywarn Team is made up of an all volunteer group of people who utilize Amateur Radio (Ham) radio frequencies to corrdinate activities and to report directly to the NWS Office in Lincoln. This streamlined communication procedure ensures that the staff at Lincoln Weather receives accurate, real-time information from our field personnel. Each team member is trained by NWs staff in the areas of severe weather observations and reporting and many continue their knowledge by attending additional training through FEMA or internally in topics such as Mobile Operations, Debris Assessment, and Radar Interpretation.
